Heroin/Prayer & Other New Stuff

A few weekends ago, Elim launched it’s
~ 1st Latino service on Sunday afternoon’s –
This is just one of several things that have started around here –
~ Men’s prayer Thursday night – 7:30 following Ladies prayer @ 6pm
~ Saturday afternoons – Beauty for Ashes – 2:00pm – a small group for ladies that have suffered recovering/surviving abuse –
~ Saturday evenings – Bible Study for new believers -
We have been having a growing # of men coming for men’s prayer every week– this past week, I showed up late – just as a couple I didn't know we’re trying to decide whether or not to come into the church…
I was able to talk to them for a minute and they came in with me –
The Man had been hit several times in the head by his AUNT with a FRYING PAN a few hours before – The girl had bandaged it up some – but it was still rather bloody – to, uhmm... "coop with the stress of it all" he had snorted some heroin and was feeling a little … well… loopy –
while, still fairly lucid … he kept falling asleep while I was talking to him…
(I know I can be boring – but, man… having folks fall asleep on you while there standing there talking to you – well, not really what your looking for…)
We prayed with him for a while – (he was NOT a believer) – His girl friend had an experience with God out at a neighboring church of ours… she is now tending bar somewhere across town… neither she nor the guy had ever been to elim before –
What was really cool – while, we didn’t seem to have much impact on this guy – I realized that 2/3’s of the guys at prayer that night had been – successfully delivered from an addiction of some kind or other… they were ALL able to talk to this couple about the LIFE TRANSFORMING POWER of GOD…
It took quite a while – but each one of these, NOW, GREAT men… told about how GOD had brought them through there own battle with all sorts of substance abuse…
over and over again – I heard a redundant refrain – 12 step programs can help – but only JESUS can deliver…
